On Sunday, October 6th, 2024, from 11 AM to 4 PM, Point Pelee National Park became a vibrant hub of creativity and scientific exploration during the Baroque Biology Science Fair, hosted by Dr. Jennifer Willet and her research team at INCUBATOR Art Lab. As part of Ontario Culture Days, this unique art and science fair captivated audiences of all ages through storytelling, sculpture, parades, performances and workshops. Dr. Willet and special guests invited park-goers to learn more about Great Lakes ecology.
The main Welcome Area showcased Willet’s artwork, including the Great Lakes Algae Organ, The Biosafety Puppet Playhouse, and The INCUBATOR in Sheep’s Clothing. These pieces were specially reimagined for the event, featuring custom flags that danced in the wind. Additionally, there was a science engagement table with Dr. Catherine Febria and her team of researchers from UWindsor's Healthy Headwaters Lab, where visitors could observe water samples and engage with scientists about topics related to the Great Lakes. Inside the Welcome Centre, attendees were also invited to create their own algae paintings with the help of members from the INCUBATOR Art Lab team.
Following these activities, the main event concluded with a parade to the point, during which Dr. Jennifer Willet debuted her algae dress. Local bagpiper Ryan Burchiel accompanied the procession alongside our art pieces—the organ, playhouse, and sheep—whimsically parading with team members who held ribbons and flags. Students from the School of Creative Arts (SoCA) also assisted in showcasing the artwork, creating a delightful moment in the woods where the community could experience art in unexpected places—art for those who might not have anticipated seeing it that day.
