On Thursday April 1st, IOTA Institute and INCUBATOR Art Lab hosted the third Bio Art Hangout Kitchen series with Marc Dusseiller. In this Livestream event, participants toured Hackteria lab based out of Bitwascherei in Zurich, Switzerland and toured the INCUBATOR Art Lab facilities in Windsor Ontario, Canada. Marc Dusseiller presented his research where he discussed hacker networks, citizen science, and DIY approaches to sharing open-source biological art. In his talk he discussed how his intention is to create global connections through open-source spaces and mobile labs.
Throughout the Livestream event, it was apparent that both Hackteria Lab and INCUBATOR Art Lab share a DIY approach when creating Bio Art, hackerspaces, and laboratory spaces. Though Hackteria is committed to non-institutional biotech and bioart research and production, whereas INCUBATOR Art Lab has committed to working within an institutional framework. Both Desseiller and Willet argue that biotechnology originates with food practices in the kitchen! During the tour of Hackteia’s lab Desseiller mentioned how his new laboratory design based on a replica of a kitchen in Indonesia. Willet showed viewers the chandelier hanging in the center of INCUBATOR Art Lab and explains how her space mimics a North American domestic kitchen. The conversation between both labs explores other ways of knowledge generation through sharing, making, hacking, and creating with the biological sciences.
